Annual CEO Sleepout Raises Nearly $200,000 in Support of Jobs for City’s Homeless

Downtown Winnipeg – More than 160 CEOs, community leaders, and members of the media took to the streets at the 4th annual CEO Sleepout, hosted by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. Camped out at Portage and Main, participants used this evening as an opportunity to elevate discussion and awareness about homelessness, and raise funds to give those living on the streets jobs.

Multi-family development spurs other new project nearby.

The success of the West Broadway area's first new multi-family residential development in recent memory has helped spark another development just a few blocks away.

The new development planned for the northwest corner of Maryland Street and Wolseley Avenue is much smaller than Sandhu Developments' Element Condominiums development near the corner of Sherbrook and Sara Avenue -- nine units versus 44.

New apartment project to be finished by Christmas

A former bag factory in the Centennial neighbourhood is being converted into an apartment building.

Bag Factory, a project of Winnipeg real estate developer Sandhu Developments, will soon occupy 311 Alexander Ave.

Built in 1906, the six storey concrete building was originally the Bemis Bag Building, before Endurapak Inc., an industrial bag manufacturer, moved into the space in the mid-'90s.

Former factory, livestock building being converted into apartments

Two more downtown buildings are being converted into rental apartments -- both by the developer of one of the area's high-profile new condominium developments.

Sandhu Developments Ltd., which earlier this month broke ground on its $34-million D Condo complex on Assiniboine Avenue, is converting the six-storey former Bemis Bag Building at 311 Alexander Ave. into 88 apartments and the five-storey former Adelaide Mini Storage building at 49 Adelaide St. into 51 rental units.

THE owner of Sandhu Developments says he hasn't given up on the idea of building a new residential complex at the northern end of the city's west Exchange District.

Karampaul Sandhu said in an interview he still hopes to build a six-storey, 60-unit condominium development on a vacant lot CentreVenture Development Corp. owns on the southeast corner of Princess Street and Logan Avenue.

Another highrise condominium complex is in the works that would further alter the face of Assiniboine Avenue, one of the city's premier riverfront streets.

Sandhu Developments Inc., a two-year-old Winnipeg firm with two suburban condo developments under its belt, has acquired the Restaurant Dubrovnik site at 390 Assiniboine and plans to build a 20-plus-storey condo complex on the riverbank property.
